Coverage Explanation Example State Requirements
Bodily Injury Liability Coverage for injuries a covered driver causes to someone else. Injuries which result from an accident caused by a covered driver. Required in most states.
Property Damage Liability Coverage for damage a covered driver causes to someone else's property. Damage to someone else's vehicle. Required in most states.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists Funds to help pay for treatment of injuries caused by a collision with an uninsured motorist. May also be used if at-fault driver has inadequate liability insurance. Required in some states, optional in others.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) also known as Medical Payments Funds to help pay for treatment of injuries caused to the driver and/or passengers of the policyholder's vehicle. May cover medical payments, lost wages, etc. Required in some states, optional in others.
Collision Funds to repair damage caused to the policyholder's vehicle. Collision with another vehicle, tree, etc. Optional in most states.
Comprehensive Funds to repair damage to the policyholder's vehicle that are not the result of an accident with another person's vehicle. Fire, theft, vandalism, glass breakage, etc. Optional in most states
